Overview

Working with multinational media & digital marketing agency, Dentsu Aegis Network and Singapore-based experiential agency, Rebel & Soul, Knit created a digital ceiling installation that would bring together people, technology and music at the 2016 Spikes Asia Festival of Creativity.

Campaign

Spikes Asia is an annual event for Asia Pacific's creative industry set over three days in Singapore and this year, sponsored by Dentsu. One of the highlights of the festival was an exclusive rooftop party themed ‘Neo Godai’. ‘Godai’ is the Japanese term for the five elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Void, and the term ‘Neo Godai’ refers to the new elements used to innovate and shape the world for the future. Taking this concept as inspiration for our brief, Knit developed an interactive installation that would encompass all of these five elements and engage with this specific tech-savvy and future-forward audience.

The 3D projected ceiling installation we developed was centerpiece to the dance floor and it enabled participants to control live visual effects through powerful laser projectors that represented each of the five elements of ‘Godai’ direct from their mobile phones. Using a web app, the user selected which element they wanted to interact with on their phone interface, and from this they could control the element within the swirling mass of projected elements on the ceiling.

An element of gamification meant that a specific number of users for any element would cause a ‘take-over’ that would visually change the display and transform swirling patterns into, for example, five fireballs flying around the ceiling.  The mesmerising swirling graphics also responded to changes in music by syncing with the DJ’s mixing desk and at idle periods, the display would show branded content to further communicate Dentsu’s sponsorship of the event.

The technology involved in developing this project was complex and the team faced several challenges in its execution. However, using node based Web GL and Web Sockets, we were able to ensure a constant two-way connection between the phone and installation, and after rigorous testing we provided constant and live interaction from user to installation with no lag.

 Results

Despite a tight deadline and technical challenges due to the complexity of the project, the installation was delivered on time and on budget to a delighted client. The project perfectly represented the concept and embodied the ‘Neo Godai’ theme of the evening. The technology was seamlessly integrated into the event and added to the enjoyment of attendees. It was met with enthusiasm and created the ‘wow’ factor at the 500-strong industry party. The event was covered by the press in leading marketing industry publications remarking on its innovation.
