The Aviva Heritage Wall is an interactive installation set in Aviva’s Head Office in the St Helen’s building, London. Using a fusion of cutting edge technologies, the wall connects Aviva’s 300-year history with its future by displaying historic documents for visitors to the building in an interactive and innovative way.
Aviva’s Group Archive is widely regarded as the most important insurance industry archive in the UK. The brief was to develop an installation within the reception area of St Helen’s, which would enable visitors to Aviva to discover more about the company’s rich heritage, by making the archives accessible and searchable.
There are two main components to the Heritage Wall installation. The first takes it inspiration from the solar system.
This installation enables visitors to explore the many companies – over 750 - that make up Aviva. The ‘attractor’ screen creates intrigue by detecting and responding the movement of passers by, once engaged the visitor then interacts with solar system styled interface on a large format touchscreen, This enables the users to explore and find photographs, documents and films from the archive about each of the companies. This digital interaction is intuitively designed with the end user experience in mind, and manages to simplify a vast array content through a highly innovative interface design to easily explore Aviva’s vast history.
The second interaction resembles a piece of modern art and complements St Helen’s contemporary decor. The mosaic is a celebration of the people which make Aviva what it is. Initially the user is drawn to the screen by the large pixel format reflection of the passer by. A motion senor then detects when the passer by has stopped which triggers a call to action to interact with the screen. Visitors can touch any of the large pixels that make up the abstract mosaic-style reflection and then view each pixel as an individual piece of archive content.
The Heritage Wall provides a unique visitor experience which both showcases Aviva’s heritage and also their passion for innovation and technology. Anna Stone, Aviva Group Archivist explains, “When we were planning on renovating our Head Office, we knew we wanted something that would reflect who we are and what we’re about to our visitors. Knit came up with this brilliant concept and we’re so thrilled with the Heritage Wall.” Anna goes on to say, “It’s a real talking point for our visitors and it shows how proud we are of our history and our people.”
